The purpose of Green Psychology is to advocate personal growth. As individuals grow and evolve, so will the families, communities, cultures, and global society they belong to. Ultimately, Green Psychology promotes a sustainable, respectful, and responsible path for self-renewal. We support people in living a purpose-filled and principled life that is also, at the same time, passionate and peaceful.
Following is a brief introduction to the basics of Green Psychology. This is a good place to start. On the right side of this page, you will find links to full-length Articles about the foundations and applications of Green Psychology. These provide more detailed explanations about when and why the practices we advocate are helpful. In our Discussions section, you will find an interactive dialogue about various topics in Green Psychology. We periodically post thought-provoking questions for discussion among members of our community. We invite you to join in our ongoing exploration.
We tie growth to what we call “Green Principles.”
- That our growth is based on making choices, through which we renew ourselves. These choices are reflected in how we act, how we speak to others and ourselves, and how we make meaning of the world around us.
- That these choices result in the wise use of our personal energy. This means not wasting, depleting or disrespecting ourselves.
- That we can take a high degree of responsibility for the impact of our words, the imprint of our actions, and the quality of the emotional footprint that we leave behind.
- That we nurture the diversity and differences among people. This means developing our capacity to appreciate how and why other people make different choices, and respecting the strength represented by that diversity.
We offer tools to make this possible.
- Green Speak – a new way to use language that breaks us out of the limitations of how we ordinarily speak. It allows us to use our higher brain centers to creatively guide our lives.
- 10-Stage Model of Human Development – a framework that allows us to more readily see and work through our dysfunctional “core patterns,” which are outdated ways of behaving…as well as providing a road map for how to live a generative life regardless of our age.
- 5-Stage Model of Growth – a clear distinction between “growth” and “change” allows us to see that change does not always lead to growth, but growth always leads to change.
- Values Clarification – a way to discover what each of us most truly values, and a practice that allows us to live according to our values.
